Abstract:
Glycogen, the storage form of glucose, is important in the central nervous system where it supports axon function, and prevents injury, during hypoglycemia. We studied peripheral nerve to determine if glycogen was present and if it had a role in supporting the function of peripheral nerve axon function during hypoglycemia. We found that glycogen is present in relatively high concentration in mammalian sciatic nerve. Glycogen is located primarily in Schwann cells and has dramatic benefit for large diameter, myelinated axon function during hypoglycemia. The mechanisms of these findings along with their clinical implications will be presented.
